There are many considerations while planning electrical system that works perfectly for your home. People who purchase the home by another owner must check all the details concisely.

As electrical accidents are more often in a home and sometimes they threatened life, so it is mandatory to take some safety measures while making any electrical repair. Below are some safety tips for electrical repairs that you must know:

Turn Off The Power

Make sure to turn off the main power before starting out any electrical works at your home.
  • Use a 120/240 volt rated inexpensive tester sold in hardware stores
  • Before testing, turn off the power of the service panel outlet.
  • Touch the one prong of the tester to the electrical box.
  • If you find no power in  the tester, it means the electrical box is safe to use and you can continue the electrical repair.

Study GFCI In Detail

Use GFSI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) for individual safety, it is a safety device that will protect you from electrical current flow due to a short.
  • When an electrical current is flowing correctly, the power equally flows between the two ends of the wire, but if the wire is interrupted, the current changes its direction.
  • A GFCI notice the change in the flow of current and automatically shut down the power.
  • According to national codes, GFCI outlets are mandatory in kitchens, garages, underground building, bathrooms and outdoors for new homes.

Troubleshooting a GFCI

Check the wiring if you find that GFCI is not working correctly.
  • Turn off the power and ensure that no power is reaching at the box.
  • Take out the cover plate and remove the screws of GFCI.
  • With awareness, take out the GFCI and check the wires, make sure the connections are proper and wires are making contact with only the terminal screw.
  • For safety, wrap the terminal screws with tape.
  • Now place the GFCI in the box, tight screws and again cover the plate. Now turn on power and check.
  • If the problem still exists, replace the GFCI or call an experienced electrician.

So, before making any electrical repair, make sure to implement all the safety measures. And if you still feel any risk, you must call a qualified electrician to reduce the risk of any damage. A professional electrician is well-trained and knows all the ins and outs of the electrical work.
